The mobile revolution of India began 20 years ago with a symbolic call today. Since then, India has become the second largest telecom market in the world by consumers and the fastest growing country in the world. No other product or service has a billion customer base, except basic goods. On July 31, 1995, West Bengal CM Jyoti Basu made the first mobile call to the then Union Communications Minister Sukh Ram, India's first mobile operator to be the CEO of Modi Telstra (later branded as Spice). It is my right to make a historic call on its network, and I am a partner in it. When I look back, it still feels incredible. In the middle of 1994, Basu, the then president of the bikemodini Modi Telstra, invited me to his office secretariat Writers' Building in Kolkata started it all.

Nothing more than a polite visit. At the conclusion of the meeting, Basu said that Calcutta would be the first city in India to have a mobile network in its distinctive Bhadralok manner. Modi's entrepreneurial enthusiasm has bound him to an exact date: July 31, 1995, my mind immediately turned to a 'down project countdown'.

Determined to keep our word, we landed in Australia to discuss with our joint venture partner Telstra to help us find the right technology partner.

The hunt for Tekki, who could build such a network, brought us to Nokia, who were already asleep in Australia. Nokia has advanced technology, but was initially reluctant. Maybe it's time.


We had to be a little more confident to take them and we went back to India on the same flight until Nokia agreed to come with us. And how we shared with dubious Nokia to achieve the impossible.
